Create your own comfort pack!
We’ve all been touched by cancer, whether it’s part of our own life journey or a loved one’s.
How to create a care package for someone experiencing cancer
When a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, finding the right way to support them can be challenging. One thoughtful gesture is to create a care package filled with comforting items to help them through what is often a difficult time.
Cancer has touched us all in some way, whether personally or through someone we care about. For those undergoing treatment, the experience can be incredibly tough, with countless hospital visits, exhausting oncology appointments, and the debilitating side effects of treatment. This new reality often brings overwhelming emotions like fear, anger, grief, and isolation, which can take a toll on emotional and mental well-being.
A thoughtfully curated care package can offer a moment of comfort and perhaps even a smile during their treatment. Here are some ideas to consider:
Comfort items to stay warm and cosy
Hospitals can be uncomfortable, but long appointments can be made more bearable with something soft and cosy. Consider including:
- Comfortable socks or bed socks
- A lightweight blanket or quilt
- A soft wrap or pashmina
- Cosy slippers
Hydrating items to combat treatment side effects
Dehydration is a common side effect of cancer treatment, often caused by fever, vomiting, or frequent bathroom trips. Choose non-perfumed, natural items to avoid triggering nausea or skin irritation, such as:
- Lip balm
- Foot balm
- Hand and nail cream
- Moisturisers and body wash
- Insulated drink bottles
Staying mentally active
A cancer diagnosis and treatment can take a toll on mental health. Keeping mentally active can be a helpful distraction. You might want to include:
- Puzzle books
- Notes from family and friends
- A novel, particularly if there is a specific author or genre they enjoy
- Notebook and pen for journalling
Other handy items to consider
You know your loved one best, so don’t shy away from making the package truly personal by including items that reflect their personality or the unique bond you share. Adding these thoughtful touches is a wonderful way to bring a smile to their face! Other items that they may find useful could include.
- Comfy pyjamas with buttons to provide easy access for doctors and nurses
- Wheat bag or hot water bottle for aches and pains
- Alcohol-free mouthwash to combat ulcers and prevent infection
- Nail-strengthening polish to help with dry, brittle nails from chemotherapy
- A travel bag for overnight hospital stays
- Hand sanitiser to ward off germs
- Ginger tea bags or cookies to help ease nausea
Putting together a bespoke package for someone you love will offer warmth and care when they need it most, uplifting them during one of the most challenging parts of their cancer journey. Your kindness will also serve as a gentle reminder that they are not alone—you’re thinking of them and will be by their side every step of the way.
