Natty Sparks: Swimming for a Cure!
By Emily Usher | 5 March 2025
When Natty Sparks' dad was diagnosed with kidney cancer, she never imagined her love of the water would become a way of showing him support. This March, she’s diving into a 50km swim as part of Cure Cancer’s Swim for A Cure, raising funds to support her dad and countless others facing cancer.

Growing up on a farm meant Natty Sparks always lived an active lifestyle. The 22-year-old from country NSW has been involved in sports for as long as she can remember - everything from hockey and touch football to competitive swimming. When her father received a devastating kidney diagnosis, she knew she wanted to support him in every way possible. As a competitive swimmer and a long-time swimming teacher, Natty saw a swimming fundraiser as the perfect way to give back. Swin for a Cure ticked all the boxes, and what makes it even more special is that she is able to take on the challenge in the pool where she first learnt to swim.
“This is my first fundraiser on my own,” Natty shares. “I wanted to make a difference while supporting Dad through these difficult times.”
Cancer's impact

Natty knows only too well the far-reaching impact of cancer. Her grandfather (Pa) was diagnosed when she was just four years old and fought bravely for a decade before passing away. His resilience left a lasting impression on her.
“I have since watched other loved ones fight their own battles and come out stronger on the other side,” she says. “While my dad has a long journey ahead, the support from our community has been overwhelming. He is one of the kindest people I know, and I feel so grateful to be able to call him Dad.”
The importance of cancer research
For Natty, the advancements in cancer research have been life-changing for so many people she knows. While research may not prevent diagnoses, it plays a crucial role in helping patients cope and recover from the disease.
“Cancer research has come so far,” she says. “It allows people to have a better and longer quality of life. My hope is that with more funding, we can continue progressing until cancer is no longer a threat.”
Diving back into the pool

Before signing up for Swim for A Cure, Natty had taken a break from swimming. Although she remained active in other sports, getting back in the pool proved to be both a challenge and a rewarding experience. The fundraiser has not only helped her regain her swimming fitness but has also reignited her competitive spirit.
“It has pushed me to get back into the pool and build my fitness up again,” she says. “Now, I feel more prepared to compete in swimming and excel in my other sports.”
An incredible fundraising journey

Natty’s experience fundraising for Swim for A Cure has been hugely impressive. Initially, she hoped to reach her fundraising goal by the end of March. However, in a testament to the power of community, she surpassed her target just two hours after launching her fundraising page.
“They say it takes a community, and I feel so loved and supported,” she says. “I am so proud to say that within a week, I had already raised nearly $2,200. I cannot wait to begin my 50km swim and hopefully inspire others to support amazing causes like this one.”
Every little bit counts
For Natty, participating in Swim for A Cure is about more than just personal achievement—it’s about making a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.
“I feel so proud of myself for taking part,” she says. “All I wanted to do was help in some way, and by doing this, I’ve had the opportunity to do just that. I hope others can get behind this incredible cause because every little bit counts.”
With the unwavering support of her community as well as her own steadfast determination, Natty Sparks is proving that every stroke in the water is a step closer to a future without cancer.
